Interview Series #3
Yes, as clickbait-y as this is, I wanted to do an interview with my ex-boyfriend Laurence. It's been over a year and a half since we broke up for University and I thought I'd take advantage of the fact we are still friendly and ask him a few personal questions about our relationship. I really enjoyed this interview, it was really nice to reflect on things together and get a bit of a different perspective from my own on the break-up. This one is a lil bit more personal, so I hope you enjoy reading it.
The Interview
How long were we together?
⚪️ 2 years and 7 months.
What is your University course and why did you choose it?
⚪️ I'm studying Music at the University of Sheffield and I chose it as it has been my most prevalent interest throughout my life with both my family and friends as well as in education. I felt I would have always regretted it if I hadn't pursued it as a possible career choice, always wondering what could've been if I had tried. If I fail, fuck it 😂
Why did we break up?
⚪️ We broke up because we felt as if we were to run the risk of a long-distance relationship, we could've ended up ruining something which was really special in a much messier way. It was still ridiculously hard though and didn't get easier for a long time.
Did you always think we'd break up for University?
⚪️ I didn't, but obviously even up until we got our results everything was so undecided in the sense that we could've gone anywhere, including the same university if I hadn't got the grades for Sheffield and gone to Falmouth as well.
Do you think we would have stayed together had we have gone to the same University?
⚪️ Yeah for sure.
Do you think we've/I've changed at all since breaking up?
⚪️ Yeah definitely, while the break up certainly inspired independence, uni obviously had a massive part to play too. You're always trying to be someone at university whether you feel it's your most natural self or an altered version of yourself, I feel like I'm currently far more like I was in the relationship than I was straight after. In terms of you specifically, it's obvious how much more independent you've become and how much you've ultimately grown from a teenage girl to a young woman, but you're still the same person that you were.
Do you remember your first impression of me?
⚪️ Yeah of course, you were singing with your friends at the back of a bus on a school trip and I was so intrigued by you because you were the only one out of your group that wasn't talking to me, you were just this super attractive quiet girl with an amazing voice 😂
Do you find it weird/hard that we are still friendly?
⚪️ No, I think it would be far weirder if we didn't talk at all. We were obviously so close to an extent that I feel like certain things we talk about can only really be said to each other as others don't really know us in those ways. This primarily comes in our perceptions of self and that sort of thing.
What was one of your favourite things that we did together?
⚪️ Our bi-annual trips to Carluccio's, it's nice to have the small routines that are more special than the norm.
What's one thing I'd do that would annoy you?
⚪️ Probably just be so in my face when I was annoyed about something 😉
What do you miss most about the relationship?
⚪️ Just the small things like having someone to chill and eat unhealthy foods with while watching films in bed or having someone to do little special things for like getting random presents and tiny random meaningful things. Although, having no reason to eat unhealthily has done wonders for my figure.
What advice would you give me for the future?
⚪️ See life in the third person, don't get in your head about issues that don't need it. You'll always find yourself doubting your decisions but see them through and don't hyper-analyse change until you've given it time to manifest.
Like I said, this was a really sweet interview to do and I really hoped you enjoyed reading it.
There may not be a blog post next weekend due to having a visitor stay with me in Falmouth, or alternatively there will be an early post this week, we shall see! As ever if you have any blog topics for me to talk about please do send them my way as I love to hear your suggestions! Hope everyone has had a lovely week and I'll maybe write again soon,
